Enemy knowledge in Guts & Blackpowder is mostly about preventing the next failure. A Shambler threatens the player directly in front of it. A Runner removes a teammate from the fight and creates a rescue timer. A Bomber can destroy players, zombies, and fortifications in one bad detonation. A Sapper Zombie breaks a line with a heavy tool. A Cuirassier Zombie charges through open space and punishes shots into armor. An Igniter changes safe ground into a fire hazard. Learn the cue, call the target, and use the counter that protects the formation.

Build a threat order
Threat order is contextual. A Bomber at long range is a safe opportunity; the same Bomber beside a trapped teammate is a shooting restriction. A Runner that has not reached anyone can be handled by the front line; a Runner already pinning a player becomes the immediate rescue target. A Cuirassier preparing a charge needs open space and attention, while one recovering against a wall becomes a damage window.
Use a spoken or in-game callout before the formation is forced to react. On PC, holding V opens callouts according to the current community control reference. The goal is not to name every zombie. The goal is to tell the loaded firearm, Sapper, Surgeon, or nearby rescuer which failure is about to happen.
Rescue grabbed and pinned players
When a Shambler grabs a teammate or a Runner tackles them, do not swing blindly through the entire pile. Identify the disabling enemy, approach from a clean angle, and clear it without walking into the same trap. A ranged player can help from distance, but the moving Runner may make a close rescue more reliable. Other players should keep ordinary enemies away from the rescuer.
Official badge conditions make rescues part of progression. Soldier’s Grace requires saves from grabs and kills on Runners pinning teammates, while Old Guard also counts teammate saves. Play for the rescue because it preserves the run; the badge progress follows naturally.
Protect the Sapper line
Fortifications buy time, but special enemies are designed to challenge them. Bombers can destroy most structures inside the blast. Runners can slip or pressure around crowded defenses. Cuirassiers can charge structures, and Igniter fire can make the safe side of a barricade unsafe. A Sapper cannot repair, watch every flank, and fight every special enemy alone.
Ranged players should hold clear lanes past the barricade, not stand directly in front of the Sapper. Melee players watch the edges and rescue anyone knocked down. The team needs an open retreat path in case the structure disappears instantly. Entrenchment and exact structure durability are version-sensitive, so use visible health and current behavior rather than a memorized old number.
Use sound and silhouette
Enemy eyes, clothing, and small effects may not render clearly at distance or on a busy mobile screen. Sound and movement are often more durable cues. Runners have a fast irregular approach. Bombers carry a large barrel and produce fuse audio when committed. Cuirassiers create heavy metallic movement and a charge announcement. Igniters create a visible fire threat. Train recognition in early Endless waves where the formation is stable enough to watch without rushing an objective.
When audio is crowded, use the map. Check known spawn doors, ladders, cellars, and flanks before assuming the front is the only approach. Special enemies can be hidden by ordinary hordes. A player whose only view is the nearest Shambler will notice the Bomber too late.
Match the counter to the enemy
Routine melee clears Shamblers while preserving loaded shots. Runners are vulnerable but demand timing and rescue awareness. Bombers should be engaged at distance or allowed to detonate in a deliberately cleared space; never attack one casually in melee. Cuirassiers reward armor-aware weapons, exposed head or limb shots, and attacks during charge recovery. Igniters should be removed before their fire divides the line.
Chaplain’s Crucifix can create a major control window against many undead, but current community documentation identifies Bombers as an exception. Do not assume every special enemy will stop. Surgeon healing and Chaplain infection control solve different aftermaths, so the team may need both after a failed contact.
Mode-specific enemy pressure
Objective mixes scripted events with map transitions. San Sebastián includes a Runner event and a finale where every mistake is expensive. Moss Ironworks combines mechanisms with a long foundry defense and current armored threats. Endless introduces more enemy types as waves rise, which makes it the best controlled environment for learning the sequence. Holdout pressures fixed lanes while objective workers are distracted.
Seasonal maps can replace or reskin the usual roster. Transylvania includes vampires, armored knight forms, and Count Dracula. Use the map guide for that encounter rather than assuming every standard counter applies to a boss sequence.
Common enemy mistakes
- Shooting a Bomber because it is visible while a teammate is still inside the blast area.
- Chasing a Runner alone and creating a second isolated target.
- Firing repeatedly into a Cuirassier’s cuirass instead of waiting for an exposed shot.
- Standing behind a barricade with no retreat when a Bomber or Igniter reaches it.
- Ignoring a pinned player’s callout because ordinary enemies are closer.
- Treating infection control as health healing, or health healing as an infection cure.
- Memorizing exact damage values and missing the visual or audio cue that actually matters.
Verification status
Runner, Bomber, and Cuirassier behavior is documented in detail by the current community Wiki and supported by official badge descriptions that name their interactions. Exact health, speed, blast radius, wave introduction, armor resistance, timers, and Hardcore modifiers can change and require current in-game testing. These pages prioritize reproducible operations: keep a rescue partner, preserve firing distance, sidestep a charge, and punish recovery.
