Guts & Blackpowder controls include universal movement and interaction plus item-specific actions. Start by confirming the live Settings menu because bindings can be changed. The lists below describe the current community-documented defaults checked October 30, 2026; mobile button art and some console secondary actions still need direct platform verification.
Essential keyboard controls
Tab opens the player list, P toggles cinematic mode, and B is documented for spectator mode. Camera or spectator controls are situational. Do not press menus while standing in a spawn lane; move behind the formation first.
Firearm controls on PC
Left mouse button aims or fires supported firearms and can initiate some reload behavior. R reloads. F cancels aiming. Middle mouse button provides a precise aim action for the Musket or Rifle in the current reference. X is a context action: it toggles the Musket bayonet, changes double-shot behavior on supported pistols, performs the Carbine shove, or triggers another weapon-specific action. The Air Rifle uses T for its canister interaction.
Because the same key changes by item, read the on-screen prompt after equipping a new purchase. Do not assume a Musket action applies to a pistol or Seaman weapon. Practice in an early wave before relying on the action during a finale.
Melee, Officer, and support controls
Melee direction follows the game’s current aiming and item behavior. Use small deliberate camera movement rather than spinning through teammates. Officer’s supported Sabre ability uses Q in the current PC reference. Instrument controls use left mouse button or F to select, play, or stop music; Q/E can cycle songs, and Z can toggle metronome audio on supported instruments.
These actions can change with the equipped item. A Bugle activation is not the same as maintaining a Fife or Drum song. Watch the visible meter and keep enough space to cancel or defend if a Runner enters the support area.
Sapper Hammer controls
With the Hammer equipped, left mouse button constructs or dismantles the selected building. Right mouse button opens the building overview. Q, E, or F changes building type in the current reference. X switches between repair and destroy behavior, while R rotates the preview.
Before confirming placement, check three things: the team can still retreat, ranged players still have a lane, and the next objective does not need the same doorway. A perfectly built wall in the wrong place is still a team hazard. Rotate and position while the lane is quiet rather than during a Bomber approach.
Mobile controls
Mobile uses a movement joystick, jump button, camera-mode control, item-use button, and context buttons labeled with icons or text. The current community reference says button placement can be changed through the main menu. That customization is important on smaller screens: keep interaction, item use, and weapon switching reachable without covering the center threat area.
Mobile button visuals are undergoing community-documented changes, so this guide does not invent a fixed icon map. Open Settings in the live build, move the controls, and test interaction plus the special action for your selected weapon before starting a difficult badge run.
PlayStation controls
The current reference uses the left stick for movement, right stick for camera, X to jump, R2 for the equipped item, L1/R1 to switch items, and Square for interaction or supported context actions. Triangle cancels firearm aim in the documented layout. Directional inputs handle some menus and instrument selection.
Several secondary bindings are still incomplete in the community reference, including some class menu, camera, and Sapper rotation details. Use the live controller overlay and Settings as the final source. If an article or video shows a different platform generation, do not force that layout onto your current client.
Xbox controls
The current reference uses the left stick for movement, right stick for camera, A to jump, RT for the equipped item, LB/RB to switch items, and X for interaction or supported context actions. Y cancels aim and can display the objective in the documented layout. D-pad inputs are used for menus or instrument song cycling.
As with PlayStation, some advanced actions remain unverified. Confirm Sapper building rotation, spectator controls, and any weapon-specific special before relying on them.
Fix common input problems
If interaction fails, step away and face the highlighted part of the object before pressing the input again. If the firearm will not fire, check whether it is empty, currently aiming, or waiting for a reload action. If the Musket does not use the expected melee, verify the bayonet state. If a Sapper preview is invalid, rotate it and check collision with players, objects, or map boundaries.
If a touch or controller action is missing, reset only after noting your current custom layout. Rebinding can solve comfort problems, but a forgotten custom action can look like a game bug. Test in a low-pressure round.
Practice route
Practice movement, interaction, objective recall, callouts, firearm aim, reload, melee, and the item’s special action in that order. Then add class tools. The beginner guide explains when to use each input, while the Classes hub explains the responsibility behind the tool.
Source status: default bindings are community documented and checked October 30, 2026. Rebind support is documented. Platform-specific overlays, mobile art, and incomplete console actions need current in-game confirmation.
