Guts & Blackpowder is a cooperative Roblox survival game set during the Napoleonic Wars while undead hordes overrun military positions, towns, and escape routes. A useful first session is not about topping the kill list. It is about staying with the formation, reading the objective prompt, recognizing special enemies, and using your class to keep the group moving. This hub connects the three essential starting tasks: learning the match loop, finding the right controls for your platform, and earning Francs without sacrificing the team.

Plan your FrancsUnderstand the three core match loops
Objective maps are campaigns with a fixed sequence of prompts. Your team may move items, destroy obstacles, operate a winch, defend a position, or reach an escape zone. Dead players can return at specific checkpoints on some maps, but a one-life completion is often tied to an official badge. Press the objective key or use the visible prompt rather than running ahead and guessing what activates the next section.
Endless is a wave defense with no final escape. New enemy types appear as the wave count rises, dead players return between waves, and surviving players receive limited recovery. It is a good place to practice enemy recognition and defensive spacing, but a high wave can collapse quickly when players abandon the fortification line or shoot Bombers beside teammates.
Holdout mixes defense with a larger task. Berezina asks the team to work toward a bridge while surviving repeated attacks; Saint Petersburg has a fixed wave finish; Trafalgar House uses defensive sectors. The specific objective matters more than the mode label. One player surviving can still secure the team result on supported maps, so protect the last active player instead of treating a late round as already lost.
Choose a useful first class
Infantry—also shown by regiment names such as Ranker, Trooper, or Marine—is the safest general starting point. Its standard Musket gives a deliberate long-range shot and a bayonet option, while the Sabre covers routine melee. The class has no special resource to manage, which lets you focus on formation and enemy cues.
Officer, Seaman, Musician, Sapper, Surgeon, and Chaplain each add responsibility. Officers create powerful team pushes after building their ability; Seamen control dense groups; Musicians provide nearby buffs; Sappers build and repair defenses; Surgeons heal; Chaplains reduce infection and control many enemies with the Crucifix. Chaplain is not available by default and requires the official Soldier’s Grace badge. Use the Classes hub when you are ready to match a role to a team need.
Read threats before spending your shot
The ordinary Shambler is dangerous in a group but usually predictable. The Runner is faster, tackles a player, and must be killed by a teammate before the pin becomes fatal. The Bomber carries a powder barrel; shoot it at distance and never detonate it next to a teammate or barricade line. The Cuirassier Zombie announces a charge with a loud cue and heavy movement; move out of its path, then punish the recovery rather than firing into the cuirass.
Call out special enemies when the formation is busy. On PC, holding V opens the callout selection. A short warning is often more valuable than another swing because it gives the player with a loaded firearm time to solve the threat safely. The Enemies hub provides focused recognition and rescue guides.
Move as a formation
Keep enough space to see the front line without blocking other players. Do not stand directly in front of a loaded firearm, a Sapper placing defenses, or a teammate carrying an objective item. Leave a retreat lane behind the melee line. During a holdout, designate one side as the safe recovery area for Surgeons, reloading players, and anyone recently saved from a Runner.
When the prompt asks for an object, split the work. Some players carry, push, crank, or build while the rest watch spawn routes. Sending every survivor to the same interaction creates an unguarded flank. On maps such as San Sebastián and Moss Ironworks, the objective sequence is long enough that a single missed rear approach can erase several minutes of progress.
Spend Francs around a role, not a tier label
Francs are earned through supported match results and team actions, then spent in the Shop on eligible equipment. You do not need a paid weapon to make Infantry useful: the default Musket and Sabre already cover ranged priority shots and melee cleanup. Save until you can name the problem you want a purchase to solve, such as a faster handling option, crowd control, longer reach, or a class-specific tool.
Tier lists are conditional. A weapon that dominates a corridor may be awkward on a mobile route; a long reload may be acceptable when teammates protect you and disastrous when you are the only ranged player. Read the weapon tier guide as a decision framework rather than a universal shopping order.
Common first-session mistakes
- Running past the group to activate an event before the Sapper and Surgeon are ready.
- Firing at the first Shambler and having no loaded shot when a Bomber appears.
- Standing beside a Bomber while another player has a clear firing line.
- Swinging through a teammate’s view and hiding a Runner or Cuirassier cue.
- Ignoring the objective prompt, highlighted item, or carrier route.
- Choosing a support class and then playing too far from the players who need its effect.
- Buying an expensive item before learning the default class kit.
A reliable first-match checklist
Before the round, open Settings and confirm movement, interaction, objective, callout, and item-action controls. Select Infantry unless the team lacks a role you already understand. At spawn, identify the front player, the Sapper, and the Surgeon. During movement, stay one position behind the first contact so you can see threats without triggering them first. During an objective, protect the person interacting. During a retreat, turn and move before the route is fully blocked.
After the match, review one failure rather than changing everything. If you lost the prompt, learn the objective key. If a Runner caught you alone, work on spacing. If a Bomber destroyed the line, hold your firearm for special enemies. If the team lacked healing or defenses, practice the relevant support class in a familiar map.
