Guts & Blackpowder Beginner Guide

Learn how to play Guts & Blackpowder, choose a first class, follow objectives, counter special enemies, and help the team survive.

The fastest way to become useful in Guts & Blackpowder is to stay alive near teammates. Pick Infantry, learn the current objective, keep a loaded shot for a special enemy, and avoid activating the next event before support players are ready. You do not need an expensive weapon or an advanced class to make a strong first contribution.

Before the round starts

Open Settings and confirm movement, interaction, objective, callout, reload, and item-action controls. On PC, the current community reference uses WASD to move, Space to jump, E to interact, C to repeat an Objective prompt, V for callouts, M for the main menu, and N for class selection. Controls can be rebound, and console or touch layouts can change, so use the controls guide as a reference rather than ignoring your live settings.

Choose Infantry. It may appear under a regiment-specific name such as Ranker, Marine, or Trooper, but the underlying generalist role is the same. The default Musket and Sabre are enough to learn ranged priority shots and routine melee. Do not spend Francs until you understand which part of that kit you want to change.

Learn the match goal

In Objective, follow the prompt at the top of the screen. Tasks can include carrying planks, pushing a cart, operating a winch, firing a mechanism, holding a position, or reaching an escape. Some maps respawn eligible players at checkpoints, but many official map badges require finishing in one life. Stay behind the first experienced player and protect whoever is interacting.

In Endless, survive waves until the team is eliminated. Dead players normally return at wave transitions, and the enemy roster becomes more dangerous later. Use early waves to learn sounds and movement. Do not build habits that only work against slow Shamblers.

In Holdout, defend while completing a map-specific job. Killing zombies is not enough if the bridge, zones, or escape objective stops progressing. Ask which players are working and which are covering lanes.

Use a safe formation

Stand close enough to rescue a teammate but not so close that one explosion or grab disables several players. Let melee players occupy the front. Loaded firearms need a clear lane behind or beside them. Sappers need space to build and repair. Surgeons need a protected pocket where a healing animation will not be interrupted.

When the route moves, check behind the group. New players often sprint after the leader and leave a slower Surgeon, Musician, or objective carrier alone. A formation that reaches the next room together is stronger than one player arriving several seconds early.

Recognize the dangerous enemies

Runners move quickly and tackle players. Kill the pinning Runner immediately; the trapped teammate cannot solve the problem alone. Stay paired so your own rescue is possible. Bombers carry powder barrels. Shoot them at range only when teammates are clear, because the blast can injure players and remove fortifications. Cuirassier Zombies are armored and announce powerful charges. Move perpendicular to the charge, allow it to pass or hit terrain, then attack during recovery rather than wasting shots into the cuirass.

Ordinary Shamblers become dangerous through numbers and grabs. Sapper Zombies pressure the line with heavy attacks. Igniters create fire that forces the team away from otherwise safe cover. Call the special threat rather than silently chasing it. The Enemies hub provides focused counters.

Manage firearm and melee timing

The Musket’s reload is a commitment. Fire at a Bomber, dangerous special enemy, or lined group instead of the first lone Shambler you see. After shooting, step behind the melee line to reload. Do not stand at the front with an empty weapon.

Use the Sabre for ordinary close contact. Keep a retreat path and avoid swinging so early that the enemy reaches you during recovery. The Musket’s bayonet adds reach, and Officer Charge can make bayonet pushes more powerful, but following a charge does not make you immune to Bombers or armored charges.

Help support classes succeed

Do not demand healing while standing in a spawn lane. Move toward the Surgeon and cover the animation. Chaplain Blessing reduces infection; it is not ordinary health healing. Protect a Musician from Runners because the class often focuses on an instrument rather than a drawn weapon. Keep Bombers away from Sapper fortifications, and leave the Sapper a way to retreat.

If an Officer signals a team ability, look at the route before rushing. A coordinated push clears a transition; an unplanned push scatters the team. Support effects become strong when players stay close enough to share them.

Earn and spend Francs sensibly

Francs come from supported match results and documented team actions. Objective completion, Holdout completion, Endless intervals, rescues, Surgeon healing, and Chaplain Blessing are current community-documented routes. Exact values can change. Play the objective first and treat small action rewards as a bonus.

Before buying, test the default kit for several rounds. Save for a role: mobility, precision, crowd control, reach, or class utility. The Francs guide and Weapons hub help compare choices without promising a universal best purchase.

First-match checklist

  1. Confirm controls and choose Infantry.
  2. Identify the current mode and prompt.
  3. Stay in the middle of the team, not alone at the front or rear.
  4. Keep your firearm loaded for a special enemy.
  5. Rescue pinned players before chasing kills.
  6. Let support roles set up before an event begins.
  7. Move with the objective carrier and keep a retreat lane.
  8. After the match, fix the one decision that caused your death.

Common beginner questions

What class is easiest? Infantry is the most flexible starting class and uses a complete default kit. What should I buy first? Nothing until you can name a limitation in the default loadout. Why did the team lose after many kills? The objective may have stalled, a Bomber may have destroyed the line, or support players may have been isolated. How do I unlock Chaplain? Complete every official Soldier’s Grace condition; see the Chaplain unlock guide.

The class roster and broad behavior here are community corroborated as of October 30, 2026. Exact balance, rewards, map rotations, and platform controls still require a current in-game check.
