Melee weapons keep the Guts & Blackpowder formation alive between slow firearm shots. Choose by reach, swing shape, recovery, class access, and the enemy you expect—not only by damage. A long weapon can make the first contact safer but becomes awkward in a cramped room. A fast Sabre remains useful because it lets the player reposition and rescue without a long commitment.
Known melee groups
Baseline
Sabre family
Known: Sabre, Heavy Sabre, Officer variants, event-named variants.
Role: flexible directional attacks; Heavy Sabre emphasizes reach and commitment.
Firearm attachment
Bayonets
Known: Musket bayonet and Sword Bayonet.
Role: long thrusts and strong Officer Charge synergy.
Axe family
Hand Axe, Boarding Axe, Axe
Role: different close-range rhythms; Sapper Axe also supports the class's defensive play.
Check: class access and live swing timing.
Reach
Lance / Pike
Role: trades a firearm slot for long melee control on the Infantry subclass.
Risk: poor response when enemies reach inside the ideal spacing.
Armor tools
Pickaxe and Sapper Axe
Role: community-documented usefulness against armored Cuirassiers.
Risk: slower timing and dangerous duels if used carelessly.
Class-specific
Spontoon, Stake, tools
Role: tied to Officer, Chaplain, event, or specialist identities.
Check: current source and mode before buying or planning around it.
Learn directional attacks
Current community guidance describes directional melee choices based on camera or aiming direction. A downward attack can offer reach and a clear line, while side attacks can cover groups at a barricade. The exact animation depends on the weapon. Practice each direction on ordinary enemies before using it near a Runner or Cuirassier.
Do not swing through your whole field of view. Keep enough distance to see the next enemy and enough recovery space to step backward. On uneven ground, visual distance can be misleading, so attack from a controlled angle rather than relying on the model’s feet.
Use reach without overcommitting
Bayonet, Heavy Sabre, Lance, and other long tools are valuable because they can contact an enemy before ordinary melee range. That advantage disappears if you keep walking forward after the hit. Strike, confirm the result, and recover into formation.
Officer Charge can make supported bayonet or long-weapon pushes much stronger, but it does not remove Bomber explosions or Cuirassier charges. Read special enemies before following the group. A disciplined player can stop while the rest of the line continues.
Rescue with melee
A nearby melee rescue is often the fastest answer to a Runner pin. Approach from a clean side, kill the pinning enemy, and keep ordinary zombies away from the player while they stand. Do not attempt one enormous swing through a mixed crowd if the Runner is partly hidden.
For Shambler grabs, remove the grabbing enemies without stepping into the same cluster. Teammate saves also support official cumulative badge progress, but the run matters more than the counter.
Fight Bombers and Cuirassiers safely
Do not use normal melee on a Bomber in open ground. Its explosion can kill or injure you and nearby teammates. Use a firearm, create distance, or deliberately lure the fuse in a clear area when the team understands the plan.
Cuirassiers have armor and a dangerous charge. Sidestep, wait for recovery, then target exposed areas. Community documentation identifies Axe and Pickaxe as armor-relevant options, but their slower rhythm can be unsafe in a direct sword duel. A long melee can reach exposed areas, yet the user still needs timing and space.
Choose by class and mode
Infantry can use the default Sabre and bayonet before considering alternatives. Officer needs a melee that supports active meter-building and coordinated abilities. Seaman values a reliable backup while its firearm reloads. Sapper melee choice sits beside construction, not instead of it. Surgeon and Chaplain should prioritize survival and support access.
Objective favors flexible recovery through varied rooms. Endless favors repeatable lane control behind structures. Holdout rewards reach while some teammates work the objective. A weapon that feels perfect at a barricade may be poor on a moving staircase.
Common melee mistakes
- Attacking a Bomber in open space.
- Swinging before the Runner enters a reliable angle and missing the rescue.
- Walking forward through the entire recovery animation.
- Using a long weapon in a room where the team cannot pass.
- Attempting to shove or brace against an enemy that ignores the action.
- Buying a heavier weapon without testing its recovery on mobile or controller.
